How do I choose a carpet for high traffic areas?

The best way to choose is to know the different styles of carpeting so you can determine what's best; usually, it's not just a matter of wear and tear, but also of extra stain resistance, easy cleanability, overall decor, budget, and your style.

First, determine your needs

Do a deep dive: Are you installing in a family or living room that becomes the center of family activity where people eat meals, snack, sleep, do homework and watch television? Is it a hallway where dirt and moisture can be tracked in? Is it an indoor stair where people and pets run up and down all day, with safety also an issue?

Now, understand styles

You will hear the word "pile," which means the fibers are attached to the backing at the carpet store. There are three main styles of soft-surface floor covering, including loop, basic cut-pile, and cut and loop. All three are suitable for any level of traffic.

There are also high and low pile rugs with various textures. A low-pile carpet is durable and easy to clean, while rugs like the shag with long, loose fibers are best for low-traffic rooms, as is a plush texture shows footprints and vacuum marks.

Fiber: Your most important decision

Fibers affect both performance and longevity. Wool is natural, soft, and strong and has good soil resistance but is also absorbent so wipe spills immediately.

Synthetic fibers include nylon, ultra strength, resiliency, and good stain resistance when a protectant is used.

Polyester is best for medium traffic (one or two adults and no kids or pets) and has superior stain resistance. Olefin (polypropylene) is budget-friendly, durable, non-absorbent, and is often associated with looped constructions, such as the Berber. Triexta is relatively new but already has a solid reputation for strength and permanent stain resistance built into the fiber.
